Trauma Risk Incident Management
TRiM is designed to assist people who have experienced a traumatic event to deal with it effectively
TRiM (Trauma Risk Incident Management) is a peer support programme which began in the British Military and is now used by a range of organisations including the Police, NHS, Fire Brigade, Edinburgh Airport, Network Rail and BBC.
As part of this roll-out we now have 7 TRiM practitioners and 4 TRiM managers who have undergone specialised training to enable them to help support colleagues following a traumatic experience or event at work.
TRiM managers and practitioners are non-medical personnel who understand confidentiality and are able to listen to what you have to say and offer practical advice and assistance.
The process is peer-led and is used to assess colleagues who have been impacted by a traumatic or potentially traumatic event through structured discussions and assessment.
Lothian’s TRiM team will ensure a risk assessment is offered 72 hours after the incident for colleagues affected. By completing this assessment in a timely manner, colleagues are encouraged to access support to aid recovery.
Who should be offered a TRiM Risk Assessment?
Our TRiM Practitioners are trained to spot signs of distress in colleagues that may go unnoticed.
The TRiM model builds resilience by basing itself on keeping colleagues able to function day to day after traumatic events, by providing support and education to those who require it.
Examples of an events that would lead to a TRiM Risk Assessment being offered to colleagues include:
• A pedestrian walking out in front of a bus and the bus making contact with them.
• An elderly customer falling as they board the bus.
• A group of youths causing trouble at the bus stop resulting in a near miss.
• Witnessing another collision involving a car and a pedestrian.
• Customers physically fighting on the bus.
• Colleagues being abused, verbally and physically by customers trying to board with fraudulent tickets.
